Every day, we step onto a spiritual battlefield that can destroy us if we're not prepared. As soldiers in the Lord's army, we must equip ourselves properly before entering the world. Many Christians are stepping out unprepared, hoping to avoid the enemy's attacks without proper protection.
In Ephesians 6:11, Scripture commands us to "Put on the whole armor of God." Just as no soldier would enter a battlefield without their helmet, we shouldn't face our day without our spiritual armor. Every enemy studies their opponent's weakest points, and Satan does the same with us.
We're not fighting against people but against "principalities, against powers, against rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places" (Ephesians 6:12). The spiritual battles in our marriages, homes, and relationships aren't against our loved ones but against the devil trying to destroy us.
Among all the pieces of armor God provides, the shield of faith receives special emphasis. Ephesians 6:16 says, "Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked."
The phrase "above all" highlights the shield's critical importance. Faith is our first line of defense. Without faith, it's impossible to please God (Hebrews 11:6). Faith is the very starting place of salvation and the foundation of our hope for eternal life.
Many Christians are taking spiritual hits they shouldn't have to endure simply because they're not protected. If you would take a few moments each day to prepare yourself as a soldier in spiritual battle and pick up the shield of faith, many of the attacks you face wouldn't affect you.
The shield serves several vital purposes in our spiritual warfare:
Just as ancient soldiers would form shield walls to protect each other and advance together, Christians need to stand their ground and not be pushed back by circumstances, heartaches, failures, or pain.
The power of the shield is in the faith we place in God. When we're handed the shield of faith, we're not getting second-class equipment—we're receiving God's best protection.
This shield:
Romans 8:37 reminds us that "in all things, we are more than conquerors through him that loved us." With your shield of faith, you don't have to live in defeat, sadness, or grief.
The position of our shield matters greatly in spiritual warfare:
Just as ancient warriors would create shield walls for maximum protection, sometimes we need brothers and sisters in Christ to stand with us when fiery darts come from all directions.
Many Christians carry spiritual armor but never practice with it. Like a weapon you never train with, unpracticed faith can be ineffective when battle comes.
We practice using our shield by:
The ultimate promise is that God Himself is our shield (Genesis 15:1). This means:
Faith brings eternal victory. When the battle seems overwhelming, it's time to drop to our knees and say, "God, I've got my helmet and shield, but I need Your presence."
This week, stop fighting spiritual battles in your own strength. Many of us are trying to fight in areas we shouldn't even be involved in. Instead:
Remember, you and I are no match for Satan on our own. But with God's armor and His presence, we can stand victorious against every attack.
